As we say goodbye to this year and welcome in the new decade, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on our biggest highlight of 2019 and the event we look forward to every year.
On June 12th, we gathered at the Harvard Club of New York City for an extraordinary evening of entertainment celebrating the work of Hip Hop Public Health and honoring our supporters. Take a walk down memory lane with us as we revisit the 5 most unforgettable moments from the 2019 Remixing Public Health Gala.
1. We learned about the incredible power of music
Watch our founder and Columbia University’s Chief of Staff of Neuorology, Dr. Olajide Williams, explain why music is such a powerful tool that can positively impact people’s lives.
2. Doug E. Fresh taught us how to do the “Dougie”
Choreographers, Marc Santa Maria and LaShawn Jones hyped up the crowd by Breakin’ It Down and then our founding artist, the iconic Doug E. Fresh himself taught us how to do the “Dougie”.
3. Chuck D. gave us a quick history lesson
Public Enemy’s Chuck D. has been with us from the start for more than 10 years now as a Hip Hop Public Health artist. Watch as he chronicles our journey over the course of this decade.
4. Lauren shared an inspiring story
Lauren Contreras, a former student in our H.Y.P.E. the Breaks middle-school dance program, shared how the program empowered her with the tools to transform her mental and physical health.
5. And of course, Ashanti was “always on time”
R&B star and Hip Hop Public Health’s celebrity ambassador, Ashanti came in on a red-eye flight all the way from Los Angeles and rocked the stage with a dynamic performance.
