In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and those who selflessly lend their well-respected voices to advocate for critical issues surrounding health, we are excited to launch Inmunidad Comunidad, a Spanish-language extension of Community Immunity – our rap anthology about vaccines.
COVID-19 and its variants have disproportionately impacted the lives of millions of Latinos nationwide but thankfully, the number of COVID-19 cases are decreasing in the Latino community. However, the variants and fear about the vaccines compelled Hip Hop Public Health to take further action and build upon the work we did with 20 Segundos o Más.
This four-part animated rap anthology featuring up-and-coming rapper/singer Leisley and the legendary Dose, deconstructs vaccine literacy into various topics that are presented in a series of 4 60-second animated videos:
- VIDEO #1: ¿Qué son las vacunas y cómo funcionan? What are vaccines and how do they work?
- VIDEO #2: ¿Cuáles son los síntomas tras vacunarse? What are the symptoms after taking the vaccine?
- VIDEO #3: ¿Por qué vacunarse es mejor que infectarse con el COVID? Why is getting a vaccine better than getting COVID-19?
- VIDEO #4: ¿Cuál es el problema con las variantes? What’s the deal with the variants?
Produced by DJ Ted Smooth, the king of Latin hip hop, each video in the anthology features the lyrics of up-and-coming rapper/singer Leisley with reggaeton-inspired beats. The legendary Dose adds motivating shout-outs encouraging community members of all ages to come together. Columbia University Medical Center’s “Dr. Ana G” Cepin and our advisory board member Dr. Monique “Docta Mo Flow” Hedmann-Maxey also spit facts and debunk misinformation. Learn more about the DJ Ted Smooth, Leisley and Dose here.
Inmunidad Comunidad is based on our Multisensory Multilevel Health Education Model (Williams O. & Swierad, 2019) which leverages the power of culture and art to motivate people to live healthier lives. Medical oversight for this initiative was provided by Dr. Williams, Dr. Hedmann-Maxey and Dr. Cepin. Find out more about how to engage the arts to build COVID-19 vaccine confidence with this guide from the CDC which featured some of our work.
