NEW YORK, NY, OCTOBER 17, 2019 — Hip Hop Public Health is pleased to announce four new additions to its Board of Directors: Dr. Olugbenga Ogedegbe, Dr. Gillian Barclay, Mr. Eric Pliner and Dr. Saju Joseph. The Board provides leadership in carrying out the nonprofit’s mission to foster positive health behavior change among youth through the transformative power of hip-hop music.
“We have brought together a group of talented leaders from various backgrounds and experiences to work alongside our current dedicated and dynamic board in our quest to positively impact the health of young people nationally and across the world,” said Lori Rose Benson, Executive Director and CEO of Hip Hop Public Health.
“Hip Hop Public Health continues to drive innovation in the field of health and physical literacy with a free and expanding media library that is filled with engaging, culturally-tailored, evidence-based resources for children and their families” stated Dr. Olajide Williams, founder and chairman of Hip Hop Public Health’s Board of Directors. “Our new board members join Hip Hop Public Health at an exciting time as we are amplifying our reach and building deeper relationships to help youth lead healthier lives.”
Olugbenga Ogedegbe MD, MPH, FACP
Dr. Gbenga Ogedegbe is a physician-scientist and leading expert in minority health, authoring over 270 publications, editorials and book chapters in leading medical and public health journals. He is an Adolph & Margaret Professor of Medicine & Population Health, Professor of Global Public Health, Chief Division of Health & Behavior and Director of the Center for Healthful Behavior at New York University (NYU) School of Medicine. As the Associate Vice Chancellor for NYU Global Network Academic Planning, Dr. Ogedegbe oversees research programs for undergraduates at NYU global sites across 11 countries. He is also the Founding Vice Dean and Chief Medical Officer for the NYU College of Global Public Health.
Dr. Gillian Barclay DDS, MPH, DrPH
Dr. Gillian Barclay’s 25-year career extends across the public health, health care, academic and philanthropic sectors and she is currently the President’s Specialist for Academic Health at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As the former Vice President of the Aetna Foundation, she led national and international investments in community wellbeing, quality healthcare and health equity, including White House initiatives such as Let’s Move. Dr. Barclay’s career in philanthropy also includes the W.K. Kellogg Foundation where she worked to improve the health of vulnerable and low-income populations. Her leadership role within the Pan American Health Organization, the regional body of the World Health Organization, strengthened health systems with governments, policymakers and non-governmental organizations across multiple sectors.
With twenty years of experience in leadership development, organizational culture and strategic diversity and inclusion initiatives, Eric Pliner is the CEO of the London-based leadership strategy firm, YSC Consulting. Mr. Pliner has coached and developed leaders and teams throughout the Fortune 500 and beyond, across such fields as life sciences and healthcare; advertising, media, and entertainment; fashion and luxury; private equity; financial services; energy and utilities; government, non-profit social change and more. Mr. Pliner’s early career achievements include co-authoring the National Health Education Standards and spearheading health and physical education initiatives for 1.1 million students within the New York City Department of Education.
Saju Joseph MD, FACS, CHWS
Dr. Saju Joseph is the Surgical Residency Program Director at Valley Health Systems in Las Vegas, Nevada and serves as the Vice Chair and Professor of Surgery for Touro University Nevada. He has worked in academic surgery his entire career and is passionate about using technology and innovation to enhance healthcare delivery, prevent illness and save lives. In the past, Dr. Joseph has partnered with numerous healthcare businesses and private equity bankers to fundraise for charitable organizations. He has also traveled extensively to third world countries to expand medical education and outreach.
